Why To Become a Technical Writer

16.02.2024

The work of a technical writer can be rewarding for those with a combination of writing skills, technical knowledge, and a passion for clear communication.

My start in technical writing was completely unexpected. I had spent the previous ten-plus years in corporations in various roles, but always in IT. I started on the help desk, progressed through reporting, IT service, and SLA management, and spent some time as a compliance analyst. I left my last company without a backup job, and a friend let me know they were looking for a technical writer to join their company.

I didn't know anything about the job, but they said they would teach me everything. I started writing for a German client, both in English and German, so I used my experience from previous jobs (communicating with clients, understanding software, working with different teams) and studying in Germany. And I loved this job. Working as a technical writer is something that has to be a good fit for you and your personality.

Here are a few reasons why someone might choose to become a technical writer:

Communication Skills

Technical writers excel at expressing complex concepts clearly and understandably. If you enjoy breaking down complex information and communicating it to a wide audience, technical writing is an opportunity to showcase your communication skills.

For those of you who are not native speakers, English is a must. Therefore, if you have excellent language skills and can express your thoughts well, this may be the job for you.

Bridge the Gap Between Technical and Non-Technical Audiences

Technical writers serve as intermediaries between subject matter experts (SMEs) and end-users who may not have the same technical expertise. If you enjoy translating technical jargon into accessible language, technical writing is an ideal role.

Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking

Technical writing often involves problem-solving and critical thinking. You'll need to understand complex systems, processes, or technologies and explain them in a way that addresses the needs of the audience. If you enjoy analytical thinking, technical writing can be intellectually stimulating.

Versatility

Technical writers work across various industries, including technology, healthcare, manufacturing, and more. This versatility allows you to explore different domains and industries, adapting your skills to diverse subject matter.

Continuous Learning

Many technical writing roles involve staying current with technological advancements, industry trends, and best practices. If you have a natural curiosity and enjoy continuous learning, technical writing provides opportunities to expand your knowledge base.

Contribution to User Experience

Technical writers play a crucial role in enhancing user experience by creating documentation that helps users understand and use products effectively. If you derive satisfaction from making a positive impact on user interactions with technology, technical writing can be fulfilling.

Collaboration

Technical writers often collaborate with cross-functional teams, including developers, engineers, product managers, and designers. If you enjoy working collaboratively and contributing to the success of a team, technical writing offers a collaborative work environment.

Remote Work Opportunities

Technical writing often allows for remote work opportunities, providing flexibility in terms of location and work hours. This flexibility can be attractive to individuals seeking a balance between work and personal life.

For me, the opportunity to work from anywhere is one of the main reasons I love this job. Of course, different companies may have different remote work policies. Some prefer to work from the office with the writer being able to be in personal contact with the developers.
